“The best part is slowing down and paying attention to ourselves and others”

Quarantine Minutes with Roland Dénes

We launched our series, entitled “Quarantine Minutes,” so as not to lose touch with one another even during these difficult times. We spoke with our musicians to hear how they were dealing with their new circumstances in light of the coronavirus epidemic. How have their lives changed? Are they able to find anything positive in their situation? What music do they recommend for you? This time, we hope you enjoy hearing from BFO timpani player Roland Dénes.

What music would you recommend for our audiences while they are isolated at home? What do you listen to and what do you like to play to improve your mood?

Definitely something positive; primarily, I have Mozart’s or Haydn’s music in mind. For those who like opera, I would recommend Rossini’s or Donizetti’s comic operas.

What do you do in the time you would otherwise have spent with the orchestra? Who do you make music with at home, and how?

Unfortunately, I live alone, so the opportunities for chamber music are rather limited. I have a piano, and I play some Bach each morning; I also have a foam rubber practice pad I can use at home instead of a timpani.

Have you learned anything new during the quarantine? Have you perhaps picked up any new habits?

My new habit is that I cook a lot more, which is something I enjoy doing anyway. The downside is that as a result, I also have to do the dishes more often.

What do you miss the most right now?

The orchestra and making music together; and perhaps most of all, the applause at the end of a concert.

What do you like about the quarantine?

Well, the best part is slowing down and paying attention to ourselves and others, including the elderly; and being more careful about hygiene. Because there are fewer cars on the road, the air is also much cleaner. These are the things which come to mind.

Is there anything in your life you never had time for before, but always wanted to do - and now you’ve been able to try?

Actually, I’ve always made time for the things I wanted to try. I would love to travel in this period, but that is exactly what you cannot do; so I daydream a lot about the places I would like to make it to. :)

Tune in to our Quarantine soirées! Visit our website and Facebook page every evening from 7:45 p.m. If you would like to support our series, we would appreciate it very much.
