“I have always enjoyed serenity”

Quarantine Minutes with György Kertész

We launched our series, entitled “Quarantine Minutes,” so as not to lose touch with one another even during these difficult times. We are speaking with our musicians to hear how they are dealing with their new circumstances in light of the coronavirus epidemic. How have their lives changed? Are they able to find anything positive in their situation? What music do they recommend for you? We hope you enjoy hearing from cellist György Kertész.

What music would you recommend for our audiences while they are isolated at home? What do you listen to and what do you like to play to improve your mood?

The classics, of course. Mozart, for instance. I like to listen to Baroque music most of all, preferably authentic, period performances. I tune in each night to the Quarantine Soirées, and in this way, I can at least see my colleagues. And then, the most beautiful music of all: silence. The silence of nature and spring-time, early dawn birdsong.

What do you do in the time you otherwise would have spent with the orchestra? With whom do you make music at home, and how?

I spend a lot of time outdoors; I hike in the nearby woods, and I try to explore places I had not yet been to before. Of course, I practice every day: there is always something new to learn. I play some Bach each day, and I get ready for the next concerts. Because my daughter is also a cellist, we sometimes play duets here at home.

Have you learned anything new during the quarantine? Have you perhaps picked up any new habits?

I also try to learn new pieces, and I am able to spend more time on the Baroque cello. I would like my daughter, Mariann, to teach me how to make a few cakes.

What do you miss the most right now?

I appreciate regularity in my work, and I like traveling, which is not possible right now. I also miss seeing friends.

What do you like about the quarantine?

Deep down I have always enjoyed serenity; there is time for quieting down now. Being in quarantine is, of course, not good, but this is also an opportunity to engross yourself in something or to ponder something. I am trying to make up the books that I have fallen behind in reading, and I spend more time with my daughter, for instance by playing board games or gardening together. Our cat is also happy to have us home more.

Is there anything in your life for which you never had time before, but always wanted to do - and now you’ve been able to try it?

I spend more time outdoors, bicycling and taking photographs. I have other plans, as well, and I think I will have the time for those, too...

Tune in to our Quarantine soirées each night! Visit our website and Facebook page every evening from 7:45 p.m. CEST. If you would like to support our series, we would appreciate it very much.
