Rudolf Barshai,
Rudolf Barshai gained his diploma at the Moscow Conservatory in violin and viola studies, and during this time he also studied composition under Dmitri Shostakovich. Already in his youth he performed regularly with such pivotal figures as Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovich and Gilels. After some years in the Tchaikovsky and Borodin String Quartets, in 1955 he founded the now legendary Moscow Chamber Orchestra, with which he toured the world. In 1977 he emigrated to Israel, and later took up British citizenship. Barshai is a welcome guest conductor from Paris to London, Rome to Japan, in all the world's important musical centres. After his three earlier, highly successful guest appearances, Barshai is performing for the fourth time with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

Fischer combines a probing intellect with an acute awareness of every emotional shift in any given score. This creates performances with transcendental energy, in which feeling and formal logic are held in perfect balance... The playing throughout was beyond criticism. The Budapest Festival Orchestra, which Fischer founded in 1983, ranks among the most formidable ensembles in the world.
