About the program

The Festival Orchestra’s last stop on its South American tour is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest city and famous for samba, the Copacabana, Mardi Gras, Sugarloaf Mountain and the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer. The city centre houses one of the finest and most important theatres in the country, the Teatro Municipal. The theatre was originally designed to seat 1740, but was later enlarged first to a capacity of 2205 and then to 2360. Today, the Teatro Municipal is at the forefront of Brazil’s classical music culture, a venue for concerts and ballets where Italian and French opera companies make frequent guest appearances.

At this special venue the Festival Orchestra will be performing works by Bartók, Richard Strauss and Mahler.
