International tour – São Paulo
About the program
Sao Paolo, a city of 20 million, is South America’s largest metropolis and a major industrial, economic and financial centre. The concert hall here has a special history. It began life as a railway station, then under the military dictatorship from the sixties to 1983, half of it housed the torture chambers of the police while the other half served as a public transportation hub – and still does today. The idea of designating part of the building to accommodate the city’s symphony orchestra came in 1990. Following extensive architectural and acoustic research and experimentation, it was found that the size and proportions of the station’s main hall bear similarities to those of the best European and American concert halls. By today it is no longer merely similar, but has itself become one of the world’s best halls, in which every orchestra loves to play.
On June 29th the Festival Orchestra will perform works by Bartók, Richard Strauss and Mahler.
