About the program

Farina: Capriccio stravagante, Biber: The Battle Italian masters at the turn of the 16th-17th century disseminated technical innovations which helped to expand forms of expression. They liked to imitate the sounds of nature, natural phenomena, birds chirping and the like. These innovations, though without any specific musical programme, can be identified in Capriccio stravagante by Carlo Farina composed in 1627, which served as a model for La Battalia by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber composed in 1673. The programmatic music of Biber is a series of tiny musical pictures.

Schmelzer: Lamento sopra la morte Ferdinandi III Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, violin virtuoso, composer and conductor, was a decisive figure in Austrian instrumental music in the period before Biber. This instrumental piece was composed on the occasion of the death of Emperor Ferdinand in 1657.

J. Ch. Bach: Ach, dass ich Wassers g’nug hätte… Biber’s contemporary, Johann Christoph Bach, a member of the broad family of musicians from Thuringia, was considered to be the most remarkable member of this family before Johann Sebastian Bach. He was born in Arnstadt and worked as city organist in Eisenach and a member of the orchestra of the prince.

Monteverdi: Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda The text of Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda might have been known by the guests in the Palace of Girolamo Mocenigo in Venice in the days of the carnival in 1624. The guests of the carnival started to listen to the madrigals of Monteverdi performed by musicians and singers, when to their greatest surprise three figures in masks appeared singing a very well-known story from Tasso’s “Jerusalem Delivered”, a story with a tragic ending. Knight Tancredi, the Christian hero of the Crusade, falls in love with the Saracen Clorinda, whom he will encounter on the battlefield. He does not recognise the girl and in the heat of the fight, he stabs her to death. He only realises his mistake when he takes off the helmet of the dying Clorinda. The girl’s last wish is to be baptised.
